I believe Age of Conan is the first MMORPG to be rated M for mature. It has all of the aspects of a regular MMO, but the reasons it is rated M:
Fatalities and boobies.
I’ll start with fatalities. What good game doesn’t have them? In Age of Conan, combat is a little different. There’s no auto-swinging your sword, you control which direction you swing: Up, Upper left, Upper right, Left, Right, etc. These can chain into combo moves that can sometimes lead to fatalities, which range from severing a limb, decapitation, or a variety of different uber-powerful spells. It’s actually not all that bloody, and the graphics are frankly amazing.
But on to the boobies. Yes, boobies. The pride and joy of the American teenager and young adult. Boobies everywhere. Ok, not really, but there’s definitely a theme of sex in the game.
In case you don’t know, the game is based off a series of fantasy novels written by American author Robert E. Howard. Now, if you’re a male in the game, you start off as an escaped slave. Your first quest is to save this chained up woman with pretty large knockers (all the women in the game have size D’s, apparently), and she offers to “thank” you later.
If you pick a female character, the game basically hints that you used to be a sex slave.
Even in the first town you get to, there’s a brothel where very sluttily-voiced characters act, well, like whores.
You kind of get the drift though.
Gameplay-wise, it’s pretty fun. The quests are ridiculously fun, unlike how WoW was, especially in the sense of the storyline. Most of the people who you quest for have been raped, pillaged, had their entire family killed, or all of the above. It makes for a very gloomy but serious atmosphere.
The game definitely gets a 9 out of 10 so far. I’ll write more reviews as I get farther into the game. Boobies.
